We at the Fiordland Families Network hope that you had a safe and happy Easter break and that you managed to keep the kids entertained over the school holidays.
In this fifth issue of FFN we focus on parental well-being. As school and kindergarten return and we resume our normal routines, how easy it is to pur ourselves second whilst orchestrating school lunches, permission forms and all the requirements of running a home. We are frequently told during flight safety briefings that in an emergency we must tend to ourselves before helping others. If only we could use this great analogy more in our everyday lives, how much more efficient and happier we could all be.
A crucial part of achieving a family work/life balance is utilising paid and unpaid childcare. Far from feeling guilt at using such entities, we should be embracing what childcare can offer both children and parents - particularly in the Fiordland community, as this week’s editorial will discuss.
Next week, Mainly Music are hosting a dessert and coffee evening, times to coincide with Mother’s Day (details below). This evening will host two speakers from our local Community Champions, Sarah Greaney and Kelly Wairau who will be discussing role modelling, positive parenting and what constitutes healthy family relationships. It will be a fun, relaxed and non-confrontational evening that is bound to create some lively discussion, and delicious desserts!
Many thanks,
Kathryn Wright and the Fiordland Families Network team
